冠詞

英文有兩個冠詞：定冠詞（definite article）the和不定冠詞（indefinite article）a / an。定冠詞用於「特定」的名詞前（包括單、複的可數名詞及不可數名詞），不定冠詞則置於「不特定」的名詞前（單數可數名詞）。所謂「特定」指的是該名詞的指稱（reference）為說話者和聽話者雙方都知曉，也就是說，雙方都知道該名詞指的是哪個／些人、事、物。所謂「不特定」則指該名詞的指稱只有說話者知道但也可能不知道，而聽話者一定不知道的情況。例如：
a. My uncle is a dentist. （我叔叔是個牙醫。）
b. I need to see a dentist. （我需要看牙醫。）
c. The dentist is here. （牙醫師來了。）
在a.句中說話者當然知道該牙醫的指稱，但是聽話並不知道；在b.句中說話者可能知道是哪個牙醫，也可能不知道，但是聽話者一定不知道；在c.句中說話者和聽話者一定都知道說的誰。
除了以上定冠詞與不定冠詞的一般用法外，請注意下列的一些特殊用法。我們先看定冠詞的部分。

一、必須使用定冠詞的情況   

                        
1.表示「獨一無二」的事物時
例如：the sun、the moon、the earth、the universe、the world、the sky、the air、the sea、the horizon、the day、the night等。

2.表示方向或方位時
例如：the east、the west、the south、the north、the right、the left、the front、the back、the middle等。

3.表示最高級時
例如：the best、the worst、the most、the least等。

4.表示序數時
例如：the first、the second、the third、the last等。

5.表計量單位時
例如：the hour、the week、the pound、the yard等。

6.表全體國民時
例如：the Chinese、the English、the Americans、the Germans等。

7.以單數名詞代表全體時
例如：the dog、the cat、the horse、the eagle等。
注意，以man或woman代表全體時，不加冠詞。

8.在play之後的樂器名稱前
例如：play the piano、play the guitar、play the flute、play the violin等。
注意，運動名稱前則不加定冠詞，如：
play baseball、play basketball、play football、play volleyball等。

9.在下列片語中固定使用the：
in the morning / afternoon / evening、in the daytime、in the dark、in the past、in the rain、in the meantime、at the same time、for the time being、at the present time、in the beginning、in the end、at the end of、at the bottom of等。
注意，下列片語中則不用the：
at noon / night / midnight / dawn、at first、at last、at work、in class、on fire、go to bed、go to church、have breakfast / lunch / supper / dinner等。

二、必須使用不定冠詞的情況   

                    
以下片語中固定使用a：
in a hurry、all of a sudden、as a rule、as a whole、at a loss（茫然）、a variety of（種種的）、a good many（相當多的）、a great deal of、take / have a look、take a bath / shower、take a rest / break、take a walk等。

三、不須使用定冠詞或不定冠詞的情況     

     
成對照關係的兩個名詞形成片語時，通常省略冠詞，如：
husband and wife、father and son、man to man、woman to woman、night and day、day after day、hand in hand、door to door、face to face、side by side、step by step、shoulder to shoulder、from head to foot、from hand to mouth、from morning till night等。
